What It Does
A transfer switch connects your house to one power source at a time: the utility or the generator, never both. That break-before-make design is what prevents backfeed, the dangerous situation where generator power flows out through the meter onto utility lines.
Kinds of Switches
| Type | Where it goes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Service-rated automatic switch | Between the meter and the main panel | Whole-house setups; can power everything the generator can handle |
| Load-side automatic switch with its own small panel | Next to the main panel, feeding selected circuits | Essentials-only setups |
| Manual transfer switch or interlock | At the main panel | Portable generators; you flip it yourself |

Load Management Modules
Many automatic switches can control a few big loads, such as AC condensers or a dryer, and shut them off when the generator is near its limit. That lets a mid-size generator run a whole house in practice. Ask how many loads the system can manage and in what order they are shed.
What It Costs
- Automatic transfer switch: $600–$2,500 (HomeGuide).
- Manual interlock kit installed: $400–$850 (HomeGuide).
- Wiring between generator and switch: $6–$8 per foot (HomeGuide).
Panel Condition Matters
If your panel is full, damaged, or a brand that inspectors and installers frequently flag, the installer may recommend replacing it during the generator job. That can add a meaningful amount, so ask for it as a separate line item.
Who Can Install It
This is licensed electrical work. Broken Arrow requires electrical contractors to hold an Oklahoma license and register with the city, and the work needs a permit and inspection (City of Broken Arrow permitting and licensing).
